Languages - official language is Slovak although English and German are the most often used foreign languages. Older people often speak Hungarian, Russian or German

Habits & custom - when entering a Slovak dwelling the residents change their shoes in the entrance hall and offer slippers to the guests as well. In many households it can be considered as misbehaviour to don not take outside shoes off. When meeting or welcoming the acquaintances are shaking hands. Close friends or family members usually kiss once on the cheek or both cheeks and hug slightly. When introducing strangers it is polite to shake hands. It is a custom to eat 3 times daily and the most is consumed usually in the lunch time between 12pm - 2 pm when soup, main course and sometimes also desserts are served. For supper warm meals are often served too generally between 6 pm - 9 pm. It is a habit in Slovakia to use the formal second person plural “vykanie” in official relations and meetings. The informal “tykanie”, is usual in families, among friends and close colleagues. "Vykanie" is recognised by addressing with surname whilst in "tykanie" with first name.

Safety & Security - the situation is similar to all the European neighbouring countries. Especially in places where many tourists pass by like in The Old Town, bus and train stations etc. you have to pay the attention to your personal stuff and valuables. It is recommended to park the cars with foreign plates on guarded parking places and to do not leave valuables inside the parked car.

Smoking - the smoking is allowed in restaurants only if separated room is available. In other places (pubs, bars etc) it is allowed only in areas reserved for smokers. Smoking is prohibited in all roofed public areas such as covered bus stops, closed sports fields, stations, cinemas, theatres etc.

Transport to/from the Airport

To get the bus to the City Centre, you have to buy your ticket from a machine (you can't buy it on the bus) and this requires having some change. The instructions are also quite difficult but ask a friendly native to help you out. Basically you need a 30 minute ticket which costs 0.70 €. You then take a bus No. 61 which departs approximately every 15 minutes. Look for full scheldule of bus #61. The journey into town terminates in the main railway station and take about 30 minutes. From here you can take a taxi to your place. It should not take longer than 10 min and cost about 5 € . You can also get off on Trnavske Myto or another stop and follow the instruction shown in details of respective hotel or apartment.
Click here to see public transport network

It might be far easier to just get a taxi straight from the airport but they are quite expensive. A tip: ask the taxi driver how much does it cost and negatiate for max 15 € but ideally insist on 10 €. Journey time about 10 - 15 min.

Public transport

Public transport in Bratislava is on expected quality in terms of coverage and frequency by the standards of many tourists. It consists of tram lines, trolleybus lines and bus lines. Although there are still some old buses and trams in service, they are slowly being replaced with the new ones.
Bratislava's public transport network is divided into two zones. For tourist usually Zone 1 is enough as it covers downtown and most of the city.

Tickets are purchasable in the ticket machines at the public transport stops and in some of the newspaper stands. Immediately after entering the public transport vehicle you have to mark your ticket in marking machine – be aware the machines lock automatically 30 seconds after departure from the stop. A passenger without a valid ticket or season pass can be charged a fine of the valid fare multiplied by 100.

The Bratislava City Card covers one, two or three days at 6 €, 10 € or 12 € respectively.

Parking

Parking on the streets in the city centre is paid during working days from 8.00 am until 4.00 pm. The are marked by blue road sign. You have to buy a 1-hour parking card(s) for 0.70 €. They are called BPS cards (Bratislava Parking Service). These scratch cards are sold on the streets by sellers in yellow vests or at newspaper stands. There is no time limitation to park in such a place.

Many parking places in the centre are private, and so are marked with a white cross on the ground and again are marked by a blue road sign "Reserve". They are sometimes also equipped with a metal parking pole.

Secured parking lots or garages are always paid and the price vary from 0.7 € to 2 € per hour, depending on the location, day of the week and length of stay.

Information on current occupancy of parking lots is available on Parking Guidance System website.

Taxi

There are more than 20 different licensed taxi services in Bratislava. Taxis bearing a rooftop "taxi" sign and marked with a company logo are more trustworthy than those without logos. The large taxi services tend to be cheaper than the services offered directly at hotels.

All taxi services have different fare tariffs, starting from 0.40 €- 0.60 € per km if ordered by telephone which we recomend every time. Those hailed down on the street or found at one of the several taxi ranks located around the city are more expensive starting on 0.60 € up to 1 € per km. When you enter a taxi the taximeter always shows which rate you are being charged. It will show two numbers: the total price and rate (1 usually corresponds to a taxi hailed in the street, 2 for orders by telephone, 3 and higher are usually rates for outside Bratislava trips). Insist on the meter being used and check that the correct rate is being applied. If taking a taxi in the street try to negotiate the fare in advance.

Approximate journey total prices:

Airport to City Centre from about 8 € for telephone ordered local taxi up to15 € flat rate charged by official Airport taxis or some hotels taxi.
Within the City Centre about 3 € to 6 € for telephone ordered local taxi up to 10 € for a taxi hailed on the street or at taxi stands.
Main Train Station to City Centre about 3.50 € for telephone orders.
Main Coach Station to City Centre about 3.50 € for telephone orders.

It is customary but not required to leave to taxi driver a small tip usually by rounding up to the nearest 50 cents.
